Saving Money With Your Website

without comments

Jesse James Garret of Adaptive Path makes a profound comment in his book ‘The Elements of User Experience’, “Websites exist to serve one of  two purposes; to make the company money or to save the company money.”

I know the kind of website that will lose you some money. It’s easy. Here are five ways to do it effectively.

  1. Have contact details that don’t work
  2. Have content that is not relevant
  3. Ensure that you have poor navigation.
  4. Include enough moving images and flashing text to make users nauseous.
  5. Do not forget to include one important link that sends visitors to a ‘This page does not exist’ screen.

Here are five equally easy ways to get a site that will help you make some money.

  1. Make it easy to get in touch with you.
  2. Include useful information that is regularly updated.
  3. Make useful information easy to find. And bury the rest (mission, vision et al, users may not really care).
  4. Respond when visitors fill out the contact form.
  5. Make it easy for users to share the information they find on your site.

Having a website that is aligned to your goals as a business is important. But it’s not the only thing. Getting the website to work for you means enforcing standards and web governance so that your users enjoy a consistent experience today, next month and next year.
